Panopolis is a rough place to be an average Joe. I came here looking for adventure and excitement, but nobody cares about one more normal guy in a city filled with super-powered heroes. The closest I've come to glory is working in a bank that villains often rob.

But then I maybe accidentally-on-purpose helped a villain escape the hero who was trying to save the day. Imagine my shock when, a week later, that villain asked me out for coffee. One date turned into more, and now I'm head over heels in love with Raul.

Falling in love with the guy dubbed the Mad Bombardier isn't without its downsides, though. I've had to deal with near-death encounters with other villains, awkwardly flirtatious heroes who won't take no for an answer, and a lover I'm not sure I can trust. It's getting to the point where I know I'll have to make a choice side with the heroes, or stand fast by my villain.

Either way, I think my days as a normal guy are over.

Where There Smoke Panopolis Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Cari Z Nick J Russo Riptide Publishing Books

I really loved this book but I also really wish it had been longer. Some of it felt too rushed and it ended fairly abruptly which struck me as strange. And I know that there are more books in the series (thank you very much!!) but this book definitely felt a little incomplete.

I would have liked to have had some of the moral consequences of dating a villain expanded upon, this part seemed very rushed. Edward and Raul's relationship could have been flesh out a little more, it fell too close to insta-love for me, which struck me as strange since Raul is a super-villain so wouldn't Edward have needed a tiny bit more encouragement from Raul?

This is still a engaging read and it will make you curious about a lot of things that are happening in the city of Panopolis. I'm looking forward to the next book in hopes of having some of my curiosity satisfied.

Where There Smoke Panopolis Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Cari Z Nick J Russo Riptide Publishing Books Reviews

Super fun series, I loved it! I’ll leave a proper review for this book when I read it again because I WILL be reading it again, it’s such a fresh and entertaining ride.
Oh what a wonderful start to what looks to be a very interesting universe. The one scary part, <spoiler>I can too easily see government/BogCorp experiment like Panopolis happening you only need look to what was done Australian Soldiers when testing the first atom bombs.</spoiler>
What makes a Hero, what makes a Villian, and just who should be held responsible... All this and other fascinating questions get provoked in this introductory novella.

JJ is off to grab the next book...
The world is a cool idea, and I love the twist on the superhero/villain norms. There's not a lot of character or relationship development, though, and the brevity prevents everything about the plot from making sense and feeling like an organic event. You're not really prepared for twists as extreme as you get without more world building and character development-- sometimes it feels like plot points getting thrown down rather than a story. Hopefully the next book will help with that.
Picked up this one when it was on sale for $0.99. What lured me in? The blurb! Who doesn't love a good villain? This novella was more engaging than I anticipated.

We meet Edward, a bank manager who goes about his daily activities until one day his bank is robbed by the Mad Bombardier (the names for the villains and heroes are hilarious). Instead of being scared of the bomb-wielding villain, Edward is enticed by him.

After narrowly escaping the heist, the Mad Bombardier ends up asking Edward out on a date, and we have the set up for our story. Where There's Smoke was an excellent introduction to the Panopolis series. I'm intrigued enough to dive into the next few books in the series and see what happens as Edward navigates the major changes in his life.

Well done!
3.5 Stars

Interesting premise and a good start to the world building, but it needed more time to build.

It also lacked in the relationship building. Edward and Raul had so much of their relationship off page. I would have liked to have seen more time with them as a couple doing couple things around town, etc.

Mostly though, I can't say I loved the cliffhanger ending. Grr.

What I did love was Nick J. Russo's narration. 5 Stars for the narration! His character voices brought this short story to life and definitely kept me enthralled.

I'm looking forward to the next story in the series, and finding out all the wicked truths about Panopolis...but I'll definitely catch it on audio.
Edward Dinges is a perfectly ordinary, perfectly boring bank teller until a supervillain robs his bank and Edward “accidentally on purpose” helps him escape the superhero trying to stop the heist. Cue the Mad Bombardier wooing perfectly ordinary, perfectly boring Edward. Where There’s Smoke is everything I have ever wanted to read. I love superhero stories, but I normally fall in love with the anti-heroes more than the heroes. Raul (AKA The Mad Bombardier) is a delight on the page, but even more interesting is Edward who is caught between his sympathy for the devil and the questionable morality of harboring a villain. Their relationship is awash with passion and complexity and felt real and engaging from the first scene to the last. The backdrop of government and corporate corruption and secrecy revealed by the blogger SuperTruther at the start of each chapter adds layers to the story and sets the stage for Edward’s transformation into an anti-hero in his own right. Once I started reading, I didn’t put this book down and I immediately bought the sequel when I finished.
The premise immediately jumped out at me as something I would love, and overall I really enjoyed. I do think it would have been better if the author had taken the time to flush it out into more of a novel, and I felt a little short-changed on the relationship development. It seemed like the author really just scratched the surface of the ethical dilemma of dating a super-villain, and I would have liked seeing more of the courtship and forming of the relationship, instead of glossing over it in a few paragraphs.

I also think the world building could have benefited from a little more explanation and care. I was never really clear if Panopolis is just a city in modern day USA or if it's in the future or what. I think the concept of the corporations backing the superhero/super-villain industry is really interesting, but it did feel just a smidge under-developed.

But I really did enjoy, and I'm definitely planning on reading more.
I really loved this book but I also really wish it had been longer. Some of it felt too rushed and it ended fairly abruptly which struck me as strange. And I know that there are more books in the series (thank you very much!!) but this book definitely felt a little incomplete.
