The Story Edward Doesn’t Want You to Read
Unicorn Genesis starts in the Farback, as Edward’s Grappies spin yarn of life as the first unicorns, Adam and Eve, of the time before the Great Flood that tore the worlds apart, before The Realm, before the Sands, and before Marshall Clint Gulliver.
Join Edward and Clint as the world’s favorite (and surliest) unicorn tells the gunslinger about his days as a unicorn colt, and how all life (in all worlds) began, as he comes of age in worlds both real and make-believe. Unicorn Genesis is another epic tale in the Unicorn Western series exploring oral tradition, the stories we love, and what we all believe to be true.
From the creators of Yesterday's Gone (Platt) and Fat Vampire (Truant) comes this reinvention of both the western genre and unicorn lore. Written for children and teens -- but complex and awesome enough for adult readers -- Unicorn Western is "Harry Potter without wizards, with gunslingers, with talking unicorns and epic unicorn fights, and with more turkey pie."

This is a prequel, told mostly in flashback form right after the events in Unicorn Western. The first third or so of the book is also available as a standalone title, and that does stand on it's own pretty well, but I don't think that reading the full Unicorn Genesis would make much sense without first reading Unicorn Western.I enjoyed their take on the biblical stories, and the storybook adaptations that appear throughout were good to read as well. That covered a good 2/3 to 3/4 of the book. The last 1/4 to 1/3 of the book, however, was too much in the way of telling information rather than providing a story and in those sections it could get a little boring.
In the story adaptation areas, there was good action and forward momentum for the characters, and it kept me vested in what was going on, especially the scenes of the great flood with Noah and the retelling of David and Goliath.
Once the Seven Nation Army appeared, though, the book delved into cramming a lot of the lore that was hinted or described in Unicorn Western into a very short space and that could easily be over the heads even of the folks that did read Unicorn Western.
For fans of the series, well worth the read and it does make me look forward to Unicorn Apocalypse, which will hopefully be more in the vein of Unicorn Western and the story-telling parts of Unicorn Genesis.
If you are new to the series, I recommend starting from the beginning with Unicorn Western (Part 1) which is currently free here at Amazon as I write this review.

Unicorn Genesis Unicorn Western edition by Sean Platt Johnny B Truant Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Want to know what Edward was like as a colt? Spoiler He wasn't quite so much of a jerk!
This is a great retelling of Genesis with Edwards grandparents taking the place of Adam and Eve. If you haven't read Unicorn Western yet, I'd recommend reading that first to have some context for what is happening, especially during the begining of the story which takes place after the events in Unicorn Western and frames this prequel story.
This is the first quarter or third of the full Unicorn Genesis and stands alone pretty well (despite my above recommendation).
I'll start this off with stating I received a review copy of this book.
With that out of the way, this was a disappointing read for me. Not because it was bad, but because it wasn't as good as what came before it. It felt more 'interesting' intellectually then anything that got me invested in the story. It also turned the nob up on the exposition a lot. I just didn't care enough about what was happening through most of the book.
There were specific scenes I did like. The dark wood through the sandman made me care quite a bit (best part of the book in my opinion), as did everything to do with David. Edward was a great character, as was Cerberus. They both experienced important growth that culminates in Unicorn Western.
This story was plagued by mediocrity, with brief moments of shining brilliance. I hope Unicorn Apocalypse errs more on the side of Western then Genesis.
This is a prequel to Unicorn Western, but stands pretty well on its own. I dare say you'll get more enjoyment if you've already read UW, but I might be biased.
Unicorn Genesis is FABULOUS either way. It kicks off with the best, most irreverent and yet somehow still poignant and startlingly sane retelling of the creation myth. We follow a young, sweet Edward on his journey through twists and turns that kept me engaged page after page. It retells old myths in new ways, introduces familiar characters with a new spin, and the end is quite a shocker.
I loved every minute of this story. It surprised and delighted me the whole way through.
Very good novel. Fills in many parts of Unicorn Western series. Some day, I would like to meet the character Edward.
I didn't know what to expect when I saw 2 seemingly dissimilar terms in the title, but I'm glad I downloaded the free chapter. It led me on a very fun trip through the Sands and I've fallen in love with 2 very interesting characters. Edward (who is now my favorite sci-fi character of all time) and Clint, edward's rider. I would recommended the free chapter download to everyone. If it turns out to not be your thing, then no harm no foul, but I think most will want to continue the story as I did.
I am so surprised that I like this series. I had to consider reading Unicorn Western a couple of times before I finally bought it. What a fun ride (pun intended)! Even though this is supposed to be a children's story, it works well for adults too (as do all great children's stories)!
The characters are vivid and the story is compelling. It was so interesting to see how Edward came to be the surly guy he is.
This story has it all - talking unicorns, gunslingers, time travel, villains, villains who aren't quite so villainous, a love story and an enduring friendship. What more could you ask for? The next book, of course!
I was skeptical about this one. The Unicorn Western Full Saga was awesome, and I was worried that this would be your run-of-the-mill prequel where nothing interesting happens. That's not the case here. This was a beautifully written story that gives an awesome glimpse into who Edward is and why he is the way he is. It's hard to talk about this without giving too much away, but I would recommend it if you liked the Unicorn Western Full Saga. You'll need to read that first, though. This is how prequels should be done.
The parallels to scripture were well done, too.
My only criticism of the book was that it felt too long, much longer than I expected. While it was a good read, I like prequels a bit shorter. That's just a personal preference.
I look forward to Unicorn Apocalypse.
